Hymn to St. John at Vespers (74)
1.
Sweet most extraordinary martyr
Ursinicus offers a feast,
In which those conquered become the victors,
And brilliant he meets the stars.
2.
For after dreadful punishments
The weakness of the flesh is terrified
But soon it takes (returns to the) heart
And joyful is cut down by the sword.
3.
The plunderer worthily turned red (was rightly ashamed),
When he submitted to his prey,
And destroyed by the shaking enemy,
He who brought in the wound to him who stood firm.
4.
And we between struggles,
outstanding martyr help us,
Give the distrustful faith
And conquered to conquered again.
5.
In this way physician of souls,
Bring succor to the weary:
By a draught of the grace of heaven
Attend to the illnesses of souls.
6.
Let there be praise to the unborn…
