St. Peter Damian: Hymni Sancti Ianuarii in Laudibus (62)

Hymn to St. Gennaro at Lauds

1.

The nourishing light of the holy martyr

Bathes the world with its rays,

In which way the royal attendant ascends to

The brilliant court of heaven.

2.

With the burden of the flesh thrown away

He took up the robe of glory.

With the prince of the world lying prostrate

He bears back the palm of justice.

3.

Rejoice, happy Arezzo,

So great palace of the prince!

Having been given, worthy of a martyr,

Claudis and Gennaro.

4.

The face of the two lights (are) as

Lamps, a flash of lightning, of the city.

Worthy of heaven of the holy

blessed ones they exalt its walls.

5.

We seek you, nourishing martyr

With pleadings and prayers of our souls,

So that your merits may release,

Those who are bound fast with their obligation.

6.

Let there be praise to the unbegotten…
