St. Peter Damian: Ad Nocturnum (50)

At Nocturns

1.

Let all earthly things rejoice,

The stars thunder with praises;

Before the bedchamber of the virgin

Praises alternate with drama.

2.

This virgin, pregnant with the word,

Is made the door of paradise:

Who returned God to the world,

She opened heaven to us.

3.

Happy that woman who has been delivered of a child,

Most free from the law of Eve,

She conceived without intercourse,

She delivered without a groan.

4.

Rich womb of Mary,

It bore the reward of the world,

By whom we are proud to be redeemed

Freed from the destined yoke.

5.

Whom the son of the father filled,

Whom the holy spirit overshadows.

Most chaste womb of the scared girl

Is made of heaven.

6.

Let there be praise to you, most high,

Who are born from a virgin,

Let there be honor to the ineffable

Father and to the holy spirit.

Amen.
