the activities and thoughts of a pediatric surgeon

St. Peter Damian: Epigrammata XLI - L

XLI.

The one who knows puts his mouth in his heart, the fool puts his heart in his mouth.

XLII.

Concerning ill-will and slowness

A letter is changed: that which was eating, is eaten back.

XLIII.

That flesh without preaching (prophecy) rushes forth into a forest of sin

Flesh free of the word runs wild with knife sins

Barren (fields) ploughed anew grow rich by digging over with a hoe.

XLIV.

We always knew that Hannibal was Nero,

He whom even a hernia oppresses, they render light with a master.

XLV.

Concerning the staff of the master

Firmly take up a contrary wand of governing:

Those whom iron has punctured, the horn leads back with dutiful conduct.

XLVI.

Concerning the wretchedness of the human condition

Unhappy is the stock (race) of humanity because of its origin pain!

Through the transformation of the flesh he is still liable to death

And gives birth to misery, which ends the road of life.

XLVII.

He who does not touch his wife with love except for children,

Although surprising, is not to be imitated by all.

XLVIII.

Restoring to limbs cannot be without the smallest limbs.

XLIX.

The mind of a stepmother to her wards often becomes the mother’s mind,

And when the law is overthrown it is hard (for the) stepmother on account of the mother.

L.

When the holy spirit came down upon the apostles

The flame of tongues ignites the council of apostles

A voice puts forth almost as if bringing forth different speeches.

(they begin speaking a variety of languages, in tongues, etc.)
