the activities and thoughts of a pediatric surgeon

St. Peter Damian: Epigrammata XI - XX

XI.

Concerning the dinner plate

These dishes of life prepare an eternal feast.

XII.

When Christ asks the Father

Christ, you ask the Father, by whom, together with you, come all gifts.

XIII.

Concerning the Ascension (of the Lord)

God seeks the depths, but does not abandon the heights.

It is to there that he reaches out; whence he comes endures.

XIV.

Concerning Saint Peter and Saint Paul

Reject the ships of the sea, Peter, take up the key of heaven.

Paul moistens with a rain shower of honey the entire earth.

XV.

Concerning that one who remains in hate

He remains in darkness, he does not know a trace of peace.

The pungent taste produces the sweet taste;

And the covering reveals the thing badly covered.

The night acquires light anew, pain often carries away pain.

XVI.

Concerning he who is (trying to) please two enemies

While he (tries to) pleases each one, the serf loses each one.

XVII.

Concerning Hildebrand

(If) You wish to live in Rome, speak out with a clear voice:

“I present myself more to the lord of the pope than to the lord pope.”

XVIII.

Concerning the same Hildebrand

He who tames the raging tiger and the bloody mouths of the lions

Let he who does all this turn you now who has been a wolf into a meek lamb.

XIX.

Concerning those who fear everything or fear nothing

Fearing nothing and fearing everything, each ought to be laughed at:

The latter is inflated, the former lies prostrate, the middle by dividing prevails.

XX.

The rod of Moses

The rod devours the serpents of the magicians and thus draws strength from them.
